Why Video Call Parents’ Evening Works for the Future
If the pandemic has given us anything, it’s a set of dynamic ways to deliver ‘school’via digital technology. Whether it’s been work through email, online courses from my digitial lesson, or a virtual school event, there’s surely things schools will take forward into the future.
One of these is video call parents’ evening. Many schools are already delivering their parents’ evenings online, and folks have relished the virtual approach.
We know lockdown means this is imperative right now. However, video call parents’ evening could be the new way forward thereafter. Here’s why:
Convenient for Families
As a parent or guardian yourself, you’re likely to identify with the busy nature of family life; balancing commitments, after-school clubs, meals and general day-to-day bustle. Attending a parents’ evening in person is another thing to add to the list! Many parents also find that the effort made to attend the event is longer than the appointment itself. With an online parents’ evening, 10 minutes can be taken out of the day and in the comfort of your own home. It’s a much more convenient and efficient for families.
Better Time Management
Your experience of parents’ evenings may be varied: some teachers you’ll spend 15 minutes with; some teachers 5 minutes. Whilst that’s not a problem, doing parents’ evening online gives a specific time slot. The advantage of this is also that you don’t end up hanging around or having to wait if the teacher’s schedule for the evening gets held up, too.
Better Focus
Because a virtual parents’ evening eliminates you having to try and hear the teacher over a busy and bustling school hall, there’s a better focus when having conversation with your teenager’s teacher.
There’s also a sense of developing relationship with the teacher: ‘inviting’ them into your own home feels much more personal. No doubt, other siblings or pets might make an appearance in your video call…it feels relaxed and less formal.
Other Ways for Gaining Insights
Of course, there are some differences: you can’t flick through your teen’s workbooks, but- to be honest- this isn’t a year to worry too much about that. With lockdown, isolations and some schools not marking bookwork to avoid contact, your teen’s bookwork might not look like it would’ve done in past years. This isn’t to say their bookwork isn’t up to standard- but hearing from your child’s teacher is the best way to get a handle on your teen’s progress this year!
A solution for gaining insight to your teenager’s current working habits could be to sign them up to our Scottish online courses at my digital lesson. We are the perfect solution for working from home, and instantly tracking your teenager’s progress. It’ll likely be music to the teachers’ ears, too, to know that your teen is working through our online courses- this year especially. Every bit of support your teenager can get will help!
Overall, there are many benefits of a virtual parents’ evening! Are you in favour, too?
